COVID vaccine: CDC expands booster rollout, OKs mixing shots

October 21, 2021 | Millions more Americans can get a COVID-19 booster and choose a different company’s vaccine for that next shot, federal health officials said Thursday. Certain people who received Pfizer vaccinations months ago already are eligible for a booster and now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says specific Moderna and Johnson & Johnson recipients qualify, too. And in a bigger change, the agency is allowing the flexibility of “mixing and matching” that extra dose regardless of which type people received first.

October 14, 2021 | Two more COVID-19 boosters could be available for 600,000 Virginians in the next two weeks.
“Still some steps to get through and probably a week or so before we have clarity on who exactly is eligible for those Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters. But the delivery mechanisms will be the same,” said Dr. Danny Avula, Virginia Vaccine Coordinator. Virginia’s vaccine coordinator also says Pfizer’s vaccine for 5 to 11 year olds should be available shortly after approval.

October 12, 2021 | One Virginia mother is taking the steps to encourage the Commonwealth to mandate COVID-19 vaccines for all employees and eligible students. Kristen Calleja filed a petition to the Virginia Department of Health asking that a mandate be enacted for all Virginia school employees who do not have a medical exemption and all students approved to receive the vaccine.
