Get the Facts About Obesity
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States struggle with obesity. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Obesity is a serious issue because it is associated with poorer mental health outcomes and a reduced quality of life. Adults with obesity also have a higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.
There are several causes of obesity. They include personal behaviors, such as an individual’s level of physical activity, eating habits, and even medication use. Genetics can also play a role. There are also other contributing factors to obesity, including the availability of nutritious foods or places to exercise, and the level of education or skills.
