CDC COVID VACCINE CAMPAIGN

In 2021, NFL Alumni Health, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), launched a comprehensive outreach and education initiative to boost COVID-19 vaccination confidence. The campaign, which was rolled out across the nation and in 20 NFL Alumni chapter cities, involved more than 40 current and retired NFL players encouraging the public to get vaccinated to protect themselves, their families, and their communities. The initiative acknowledged public concerns about the vaccine and aimed to dispel myths by providing accurate information and driving individuals to resources for informed decision-making. With the support of 40 former and current players including 20 Super Bowl Champions, 25 Pro Bowlers, and 15 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the campaign focused on encouraging hesitant individuals to consult healthcare professionals, get the facts, and take action to protect their health. The outreach effort included public service announcements, media interviews, a campaign website featuring player perspectives and answers to frequently asked questions about COVID-19 vaccines, and community events such as player-supported vaccination drives organized in partnership with local healthcare organizations.

LET’S TACKLE HEART DISEASE CAMPAIGN

Edwards Lifesciences, in collaboration with the NFL Alumni Association Health Initiative, cooperated on the HUDDLE study, which focused on evaluating the prevalence of heart disease and related risk factors among NFL alumni and their families. The study was designed to concurrently address a larger issue—disparities in healthcare access, especially for groups historically underserved, such as African Americans. The study was conducted across eight U.S. cities and Legacy Health Strategies partnered with the NFLAH and Edwards to deliver this heart health screening.  Information on heart function, heart disease, and tips for heart-healthy life were provided to attendees. Participants also learned how to recognize the symptoms of a heart attack, and the importance of taking immediate action. Those attending the event had time to ask questions of medical professionals and received 2 different non-invasive tests, in addition to getting their blood pressure checked. These tests included an echocardiogram and EKG which gave participants a better understanding of the structure and function of their heart.
