Professor S. Fiifi Ofori-Acquah is Professor of Medical Laboratory Sciences in the University of Ghana, and Associate Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics in the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He is Director of the West African Genetic Medicine Centre, and Principal Investigator of the Sickle Cell Disease Genomics of Africa Network. His laboratory’s work in molecular pathogenesis of sickle cell disease (SCD) led to the creation of the first preclinical mouse model of the acute chest syndrome of SCD. He has established the largest global cohort study of SCD enrolling over 7,000 patients in three countries in Africa to study the genetics of cytoprotection against hemolysis in SCD. He serves on multiple expert review, advisory and editorial boards.
